Air

Air is the thoughtful element that brings justice and change, and, like Fire, is a projective masculine element. It is belief and planning and, as such, refers to our thoughts about our path. Invoking Air in your ritual will bring change, renewed energy and freshness as this element relates to the mind, the intellect, to words, thoughts, ideas and philosophies.

In the natural world, Air is associated most closely with the sky, wind and clouds, as well as birds of all kinds, but especially to eagles and hawks because of the very height they fly and build their nests. A duck or stork (although still a bird) would make a much less powerful symbol of Air being ground/water dwellers.

Air is said to be linked to study, book learning and sciences, ideas are said to come from Air, (they are inspired) and logic and scholarship are Air functions, which is perhaps why academics are said to live in "Ivory Towers" rather than "Ivory Basements." People who spend all their time thinking have their "heads in the clouds" and if they're "airheads", they mistake imagination for real life and are impractical (because practicality is an Earth quality). Air is all about thinking, often to the detriment of feeling and Air people can be abstractly orientated, seeing the bigger picture rather than the details. The absent-minded professor stereotype is Air in the extreme - brilliant, but utterly impractical.

When you think of Air, think of new beginnings of all kinds, as anything that "dawns" is a thing of Air (the Sun dawns in the East, which is the direction related to Air); this can be anything from a project, a creation, a career or an idea. Often inspiration feels like the sunrise; a bright beginning full of promise and possibility with the liberty of Air bringing new opportunities towards you.
